World Children’s Day – 20 November
World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as a universal children’s day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international solidarity, awareness among the world’s children and improve children’s well-being.
20 November is an important date because it is the date on which the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of the Child in 1959. It is also the date on which the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
Since 1990, World Children’s Day has also been the anniversary of the day the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration and Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Mothers and fathers, teachers, nurses and doctors, government leaders and civil society activists, religious and community elders, corporate moguls and media professionals, as well as young people and children themselves, can play an important role in making Children’s Day a meaningful day for their societies, communities and nations.
World Children’s Day offers an inspiring entry point for all of us to support, promote and celebrate children’s rights, leading to dialogues and actions that build a better world for children.
