JESUIT ROMA MISSION: THE “PRESENCE HOUSE” IN ARLO IS READY!

The Jesuit presence in Arlo has reached a milestone: the building housing the programmes launched in recent months has been completed. At 46, Vasút út, development sessions are organised in the mornings for children under three and their mothers, and in the afternoons dance and music classes are held for primary and secondary school children, as well as school tutoring. They also help disadvantaged families, many of them gypsy, with their daily needs and provide washing and bathing facilities at the Presence House.

The ‘Present’ programme is social work to help marginalised people living in slums and gypsy settlements to catch up and integrate. It is a long-term and multi-faceted approach tailored to local needs, aimed at helping people to escape unemployment, lack of education, housing poverty and inherited and learned helplessness. The Hungarian Jesuits have committed themselves and their staff to implement the Ministry of Interior’s ‘Catching-up Settlements’ programme in Arlo, Borsod County, from summer 2020.
